Classroom 2.0-PLN Step 9

October19

After looking at Classroom 2.0, I decided against joining.  It seems a bit dated, with many posts being 3 years old. Also, any media reviews a over a year old, and no one I know has heard of Ning.  I am quite happy with the communities I currently participate in for my PLN, and feel that Classroom 2.0 would be just one more thing.

As far as global networking, everything now is global networking.  FB, Twitter, Google+, GPSNetwork, etc. are all accessible to educators worldwide.  .com, .net, .org, and .edu bring the world to your fingertips and screens.  It’s just a matter of preference as to what you use to bring in and/or share.

I’m sticking with my go-tos.  They’ve worked for me so far. 🙂

“Classroom 2.0-PLN Step 9”

    Hi Cyndi

Thanks for sharing your reflection. It was a tough decision as to whether to keep Classroom 2.0 in the PLN series or remove it. The Classroom 2.0 Live Webinar series continues to be an important resource for educators.

Ning was very popular once to use with students and as part of developing personal learning networks. Its popularity declined when they changed their business model and started charging for their service. A few educators use Ning but it is mainly the well established ones like Classroom 2.0 that are left.

Google+ is now the preferred network who want to set up new Global networks. I did consider adding in Google+ as an extra step or replacing Classroom 2.0 with Google+ communities.

The original PLN series was developed in early 2011 which was pre Google+ days while Ning was still popular but declining (switched business model in 2010).

I think adding Google+ is a great idea. Our entire school system is converting over in the next few weeks, and I know we’re not the only system to be Google-exclusive.
